How fire ratings work

A fire rating is a tested time at temperature, not a general claim. A safe rated 60 minutes for paper has been tested to hold its interior below the point at which paper chars for that period in furnace conditions. Ratings in this range run from 30 to 120 minutes depending on model.

The point most buyers miss is that paper and digital media are not the same. Paper survives to roughly 180°C. A USB stick, memory card, hard drive or backup tape can fail between about 55°C and 70°C. A safe rated for paper will not necessarily save a hard drive. For digital media use a data safe rated for it.

Fire protection and theft protection together

Fire construction and attack resistance are different engineering problems. Several models here carry both a fire rating and a cash rating, which is usually what a business needs. If theft is the main concern and fire secondary, compare security safes and high security safes.

Where to put a fire safe

Ground floor, away from the kitchen, and bolted down. In a serious fire an unfixed safe can fall through a weakened floor, and the drop often does more damage than the heat. Every Phoenix fire safe is supplied ready to fix with bolts included.
