What Eurograde actually means

Eurograde is a European classification for safes tested against forced attack to the EN 1143-1 standard. A test house attacks the safe with defined tools and awards a resistance value, which translates into a grade. The higher the grade, the longer and harder the safe held out.

The practical effect is that a graded safe gives your insurer something objective to work with. A safe described only as “heavy duty” with no grade behind it means very little when negotiating cover for cash, stock or jewellery.

Matching the grade to the cover

Grades here run from Grade 0 to Grade 5, with suggested cash cover rising accordingly and valuables cover normally around ten times the cash figure. Those figures are the manufacturer’s recommendation and are widely used as a benchmark, but they are not a guarantee of cover. Confirm the required grade with your own insurer or broker first, because being one grade short can undermine a claim.

Weight, fixing and access

Graded safes are heavy by design and larger models run to several hundred kilos. Check the route in, the floor loading and the final position before ordering. All are supplied ready to fix. Unsure which grade you need? Ask us before you order. For lighter requirements see security safes or home safes.
