Choosing a safe in Ireland: what actually matters

Most people buying a safe are weighing up three things: what they need to protect it from, how much cover their insurer expects, and where the safe is going to live. Those three matter far more than brand or looks.

1. Theft, fire, or both

A security safe resists attack. A fire safe protects the contents from heat. They are tested to different standards, and a safe that is excellent at one is not automatically good at the other. Paper chars at around 180°C, while a USB stick or hard drive can be ruined below 70°C, which is why data safes are a separate category. If you need both, look for a model rated for both rather than assuming.

2. Cash rating and insurance cover

Irish insurers generally ask for a recognised cash rating once you are storing meaningful amounts at home or on business premises. The rating indicates how much cash the safe is considered suitable for, with a valuables figure normally around ten times the cash figure. Ratings here run from €1,500 to €150,000 cash. These are the manufacturer’s suggestion rather than a guarantee, so confirm the figure with your own insurer or broker before buying.

3. Size, weight and fixing

A safe under roughly 50kg should always be bolted down, and most insurers expect fixing regardless of weight. Phoenix safes ship ready for floor or wall fixing with bolts included.
