Why a fire file rather than a fire safe

A fire safe is built around a single door and a box. A fire file is built around drawers you open every day. If records are live and in daily use a safe becomes a nuisance, people stop putting things back, and the protection is defeated. Fire rated filing gives protection without changing how the office works.

Ratings and what they cover

These cabinets are rated for paper, typically 60 minutes or more depending on model, built around paper surviving to roughly 180°C. If the drawers will also hold backup drives, tapes or memory cards, those need a data safe, because media fails at a far lower temperature.

Practical points

• Fire rated cabinets are substantially heavier than standard filing. Check floor loading above ground level.
• Allow drawer pull out clearance in front, which is more than people plan for in a narrow office.
• Only one drawer should be open at a time on taller units, for stability.
• Lockable drawers matter for GDPR as much as fire does, since personnel and customer files need access control.
