Storage requirements for certificate holders

An Garda Síochána assess secure storage as part of the firearms certificate process, and the inspecting member will want to see a properly constructed, properly fixed cabinet. Requirements can vary with the number and type of firearms held, so confirm what is expected with your local firearms officer before buying rather than after.

What to look for

• Capacity — count barrels, then allow room. Cabinets are sized by guns held with scopes fitted, which takes more space than expected.
• Separate ammunition compartment — ammunition is normally stored separately, and most cabinets include an internal lockable box.
• Fixing — cabinets must be bolted to a solid wall or floor. Bolts are supplied.
• Location — out of sight, not in an outbuilding, not visible from a window.

Beyond the cabinet

Scopes, moderators and paperwork often need somewhere secure too. A home safe alongside the cabinet covers those without cluttering gun storage. Talk to us about sizing.
