What size home safe do you need?

Most people underestimate. A safe that only just fits your passports today will be useless once you add a deed, a watch box and a laptop backup. As a rough guide, 20 to 25 litres holds documents and small valuables, 35 to 45 litres takes A4 folders standing up, and above 60 litres starts to handle laptops and larger boxes.

Fixing it down is not optional

A home safe that is not bolted down is a box a burglar carries to the van and opens at leisure. Every Phoenix home safe includes fixing bolts for floor or wall mounting. Most Irish home insurance policies expect the safe to be fixed, and many specify a cash rating, so check your policy wording before choosing.

Key lock, electronic or fingerprint

A key lock is simple with nothing to go flat, but the key has to live somewhere sensible. An electronic lock lets you share a code and change it when circumstances change, which suits families and holiday lets. Fingerprint locks are fastest for frequent access. All three are represented here.

Fire protection at home

If the safe will hold wills, deeds, birth certificates or anything hard to reissue, consider a fireproof safe rather than a security only model. For jewellery and cash where theft is the concern, a security safe with a suitable cash rating is usually better value.
